Fusing album rock and rap more forcefully and convincingly than Kid Rock or Durst-style aggro bands (the latter of whom they seem to lampoon on "Rock Star"), N.E.R.D. whip up a creamy yet slammin' mix. A pretty terrific listen and one of the most adventurous, intriguing hip-hop albums in a long, long time...

Though not quite the shotgun blast of an album that its predecessor, Feel the Darkness, was, Blank Blackout Vacant is nonetheless an ample testimony to Poison Idea's unbridled power and force. Suffused with enough hate, pain, and rage to fuel an entire army, Jerry A.'s vocals, positively dripping with bile and venom, certainly cement his ideas with passion and force...

This two-disc set delivers exactly what is promised in its parenthetical subtitle. The collection updates XTC's previous singles set, WAXWORKS, with an additional ten year's worthof selections blasted out towards the hit parade. That all of these didn't make a climb to anywhere near the top of thecharts is no reflection on their quality - on the contrary, few bands have ever offered this breadth of sterling songs. From the bristly energy in their earliest sides, to mid-period streamlined powerhouses to stunning, mature confidence...

The classic 1998 album from the art-damaged Swedish hardcore band Refused, never quite lived up to its title. It didn't, after all, anticipate the arrival of the guylinered MySpace emo bands who have clogged Warped Tour bills in the years since. The album took some of greatest trends of 90s hardcore (the angular frenzy of Born Against, the free-jazz leanings and revolutionary slogan-slinging of Nation of Ulysses) and distilled them into a towering, impeccably produced onslaught - basement punk rendered as stadium rock. To this day, "New Noise" gets pulses racing.

An hour-long disc filled with musical explorations and compositions that defy belief, Flying in a Blue Dream is unquestionably Joe Satriani at his absolute best. Breaking his all-instrumental tradition for the first time, he croons on six of the disc's 18 tracks, including the weird "Strange"; and the bluesy, hard-rocking "Big Bad Moon"; and the driving "Can't Slow Down." Satriani's voice isn't extraordinary, but it fits extremely well with the music he creates, especially on the acoustic-tinged, uplifting "I Believe"...

The Groovie Ghoulies will rock you like a hurricane. Hailing from Sacramento, California, they tour almost constantly. Kepi, Roach and Scampi are almost too cute for words, and could be easily dismissed if they didn't rock so hard. Their songs have a child-like quality that befits their cartoon namesakes, and yet lyrically, they are still able to take on concerns about more adult emotions...

Entertainment! is Gang of Four’s debut LP, released in 1979. As a so-called post-punk record, it exhibits a tendency in bands from their time to take the then nascent punk rock style and experiment with its manifestations. This is definitely not a typical punk record in the sense of The Ramones’ quick pop riffing or The Velvet Underground’s too-cool to care attitude; Gang of Four’s particular twist on the punk sound featured here used generally quick tempos as usual, but a different rhythmic attack with angular, sharp chords that stabbed into the music with staccato accents against a funkier, jammier bass and drum backdrop...

A Collection of Pop Classics could easily pass for a white supremacist album with its cover shot of guitar-toting Klansmen and song titles like "The New Aryans." Skinheads will be disappointed to find that the album cover, as well as the band's name, are actually deeply ironic commentaries on Ronald Reagan's social and economic policies. The anthology collects Reagan Youth's two albums, Volume One (1984) and Volume Two (1990), on one disc. Volume One is a classic of the hardcore genre with abundant hooks, energy, and righteous fury. Reagan Youth's theme song declares, "We are Reagan Youth, sieg heil!" while blasting Reagan's followers as "brainwashed slime." "The New Aryans" proposes a "final solution" for Nazis and the KKK, and "I Hate Hate" takes a humorously circuitous swipe at negativity. "Are You Happy" and "No Class" critique conformity, authority, and the dominant culture, while "Degenerated" blasts drug use (which, in a further irony, eventually brought down lead singer Dave Insurgent.) The 1990 album finds Insurgent fronting a new group of players who sound as if they traded their hardcore record collection for a copy of Mötley Crüe's first album. The leftist politics remain, but the song title "Heavy Metal Shuffle" shows which way the band is heading...

One of a handful of pop groups in the latter half of the 1990s to exploit the renewed interest in American roots (swing, big band, soul) music, this Eugene, Oregon ensemble scored big with a neat modern update of the old school. Purists take note: Cherry Poppin' Daddies built a following by touring with third-wave ska outfits like Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish, prompting main Daddy Steve Perry to wryly call his group "third-wave swing." But post-Swingers dance fanatics (rockabilly retro-cats, modern-day sockhoppers, and Royal Crown Revue boosters) don't sweat the particulars. Charged horn arrangements, bouncy rhythms, and saucy verve effectively recall masters like Basie, Cab, and Ol' Blue Eyes while injecting an unmistakable post-punk ethic...
