The first full-length album by Germany's Beatsteaks (following a self-released demo and a 1997 EP) was released on Epitaph in 2000, but it sounds as if the group's heart and soul lie in the immediate pre-grunge era; Launched would not sound out of place played amongst a bunch of mid-to-late-'80s releases on the SST label, plus maybe the first couple of Faith No More albums. The tempos are not quite grunge-vintage slow, but they're relatively tempered, and the there's a metallic edge to the guitars on songs like the thundering opener, "Panic," that sets the Beatsteaks apart from most of their Epitaph brethren...

The core of the album’s tracks reflects the prevailing movements of that era: punk, goth and indie. Many of them were given their first spin in Peel’s radio show. Most of the artist included (Gang Of Four, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Jam, The Cure, etc) gave shape to the music of a whole generation, played next to some others (Red Guitars, Half Man Half Biscuit, Pete Wylie) that weren’t so lucky. The rest of the selection goes from reggae (Misty in Roots “Man Kind”, one of his all-time favourites) to cult poets (Ivor Cutler), avant-garde experimentalists (Peel's support for Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman” fuelled the track’s crossover to the top of the charts) to hip-hop (early seminal records such as Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message”), which accurately shows the defining character of the DJ’s music taste: eclecticism with an open mind for the new and the groundbreaking...

The "Monty Pythons of punk". Kick-ass Ramones style punk rock from Germany. The Richies may not be the first, but they are sure great at this sort of thing. Like the Ramones, they have a wide range of variety in the way they approach song writing; so there's ballads, pop songs, punk songs, and hardcore songs, but all of them have that big and simple guitar attack, straight ahead drumming, and technically unsophisticated but otherwise outstanding vocals that made the Ramones so great.

Zeke's debut album is a kinetic admixture of buzzsaw, drugged-out garage rock and amphetamine-fueled punk. Produced by All and the Descendents' Bill Stevenson, Super Sound Racing benefits from excellent production, even if the tunes aren't necessarily on par with later material. That, of course, is why this is a debut album - it's the sound of a band cutting its teeth, sawing away until it has found its proper voice...

Southern California's (Hed) P.E. are known for their rap-metal hybrid and their ferocious sonic attack. The band's 2007 release Insomnia upholds the band's reputation with 14 tracks that draw from hardcore punk, hip-hop, reggae, and heavy metal. A slamming rhythm section and riffalicious guitars drive the songs, but it's frontman Jahred's vocals, which alternate between full-throated screamo and nimble, rapid-fire raps, that make Insomnia unique. The g-funk-inspired "Game Over" and "Comeova2night" are standouts.

Graduate included the future members of Tears For Fears. The move towards their emotional keyboard-driven pop success of the future was just a small step away but much of this music is surprisingly palatable. There are tunes which XTC wouldn't have been ashamed in the hook-laden 'Watching Your World' and 'Ever Met A Day'...

Brought Back to Life offers more psychobilly madness from Denmark's Nekromantix. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist Ian Dawn and drummer Grim Tim. It's approximations because Nekromantix are more interested in establishing an overall feel than nodding to traditionalism. Like the Misfits, who were more concerned with their showmanship and spooky overtones than adhering to any punk rock code, Nekromantix are happily enveloped in a world of zombies and evil things who prey in the night...

He could be the most low-key superstar in the entire pop arena. While almost anyone can name two or three Robert Palmer songs off the top of their head, it's startling to see all his monster hits packaged together and to realize just how many there were. This release is a compilation of the Smoking Popes' first indie album Get Fired and selections from their catalog of 7" records. It is of particular note that everything here is out of print and likely to stay that way, making this the only way for most fans to hear these songs. Most of the compilation is culled from the band's early-'90s developmental phase, and it showcases both the Caterer brothers' sense of humor and their burgeoning popcraft...

This is the soundtrack to the most bizarre story in rock and roll. In 1966, five American GI's stationed in Germany decided to form a band designed to disturb people. Calling themselves The Monks, they shaved their heads, donned black robes and pounded out impossibly primitive songs like "I Hate You", "Complication" and "Shut Up". Radical stuff for audiences in the midst of Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" infatuation; predictably, their album went nowhere. This was, after all, an ocean away and a year before The Velvet Underground's first experiments with atonal noise, and a full 10 years before the punk explosion...

Collection of rare tracks by this UK punk-mod-powerpop band from 1978-1981, including both of their 7"es, compilation appearances, unreleased studio material, and their John Peel session. They’re too punk for mod, to snappy for punk, but it’s all pretty brilliant…
